Coming soon for Apple silicon Macs

Your BaseCamp library deserves a Mac app that will keep running.

PlaceVault is a native Mac app for waypoints, routes and tracks. Bring over years of BaseCamp and Google Earth Pro places with their folders intact, plan on offline maps, and send it all to your Garmin. No account, and your library stays on your Mac.

One email at launch. Free to download; Pro is a one-time $49.

Why now

macOS 28 ends Rosetta for apps like BaseCamp.

BaseCamp for Mac is an Intel app. On an Apple silicon Mac it only runs through Rosetta translation — and Apple has announced that Rosetta goes away for apps in macOS 28, the next major release.

If your trips, waypoints and routes live in a BaseCamp library, now is the time to move them somewhere that runs natively. If you plan in Google Earth Pro and want offline maps and a way to get routes onto your GPS, PlaceVault is built for you too.

From Apple: “Rosetta is available for any Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 27 or earlier. Starting with macOS 28, the next major macOS release, Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.”

Features

Everything you kept in BaseCamp, in a native Mac app.

Built with SwiftUI for Apple silicon. Fast with large libraries, fully usable offline.

BaseCamp library import

Reads your BaseCamp database or a .Backup file directly — folders and lists, waypoints with their symbols, routes and tracks come across as they were organised.

Every file you have

KML and KMZ (including Google Earth Pro My Places), GPX, FIT, TCX, CSV, GeoJSON, Shapefile and geocaching LOC. Export to GPX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON or CSV any time.

Offline maps

Download just your region of a worldwide OpenStreetMap vector map, with hillshade, contours and slope shading. Works on a plane or at the trailhead.

Offline routing PRO

Car, motorcycle (curvy roads), bicycle and foot routing that works without a connection, using routing packs for your region.

Send to Garmin PRO

Copy waypoints, routes and tracks to USB mass-storage and MTP Garmin units, with clear warnings before anything the device might change.

Private by design

No account, no analytics, no tracking. Your library stays on your Mac — or in your own iCloud Drive if you choose. Nothing leaves your Mac unless you send it.

Send to GPS that tells you what will happen.

Before copying, PlaceVault checks what your unit is likely to do with your data — duplicate point names it may merge, routes it will recalculate with its own map — and groups the warnings so you can fix them in one click.

Works with Garmin units that mount as USB drives and with MTP units.

Send to GPS sheet listing 34 waypoints and 4 routes, with grouped warnings for duplicate point names and routes the device will recalculate
Send to GPS with grouped warnings (device name hidden).

Find places, edit tracks, keep control.

Search for an address, a place or a coordinate, offline with a place pack or with Apple Maps when you are online. Filter and simplify tracks with full undo, edit routes stop by stop, and see elevation, grade and speed profiles.

Migration

Moving over takes a few minutes.

The Rescue Assistant finds BaseCamp and Google Earth Pro data on your Mac and imports it into its own folders, so nothing gets mixed up.

  1. Open the Rescue AssistantPlaceVault looks in the usual BaseCamp and Google Earth locations and lists what it finds: libraries, backups and My Places.
  2. Pick what to bringChoose a BaseCamp library or .Backup file, your Earth Pro places, or drop in GPX, KML and other files.
  3. Import, folders intactYour folder and list structure, waypoint symbols, notes, routes and tracks arrive organised as they were.
  4. Plan and sendAdd offline maps for your region, adjust routes, and send them to your GPS.

Tip while BaseCamp still runs: also export your collection from BaseCamp as GPX. PlaceVault can merge that file into the imported library to add track timestamps and elevations and via/shaping point roles, which BaseCamp stores outside its main database.

FAQ

Questions

Do I need BaseCamp installed?

No. PlaceVault reads BaseCamp’s library files itself; BaseCamp doesn’t need to run. If your library is on another computer, copy over a BaseCamp .Backup file or the library’s Database folder (Mac or Windows) and import that. While BaseCamp still runs, a GPX export of the same items lets PlaceVault add track times, elevations and via/shaping roles.

Can I bring my Google Earth Pro places?

Yes. The Rescue Assistant finds your Earth Pro My Places and imports them with their folders, and you can import any KML or KMZ file directly.

Which GPS devices work?

Garmin units that connect as USB mass-storage drives, and MTP units. PlaceVault writes standard GPX files to the device. Use a data cable and keep the unit unlocked while sending.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

No. PlaceVault requires a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.

What does it cost?

PlaceVault is free to download and use for importing, organising, editing, offline maps, export and sharing. PlaceVault Pro is a one-time $49 in-app purchase that adds Send to GPS, road and trail routing, and printing and exporting maps. No subscription.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account, ever. With offline map, routing and place packs for your region, PlaceVault works without a connection. Apple Maps base maps and search are used when you are online and choose them.

When is it available?

PlaceVault is in final testing and coming soon to the Mac App Store. See the roadmap, and join the waitlist for one email at launch.
